blue swatch— Omah learns about nano-generators, commonly called n-gens. —

“Ship!” he said out loud, not being able to remember the correct name of the intelligent machine. “Can you hear me? R19 or whatever you’re called. Ah, it had something to do with water. Now I remember. R1902, do you hear me?”
“I hear you Omah. But my correct name is R19020.”
“Sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
The ship’s voice was low, soft and soothing. But Omah couldn’t tell if it was male or female.
“Can you put the light on please? I’m not sleepy.”
The light came up to a comfortable day-time level.
“Thanks! Also, I need something to eat. I’m starving!”
“Your last century was the late 13th of the 6th Age. Do you recall it?”
“Some of it.”
“Do you recall microwave ovens?”
“Yes.”
“Now we have nano-generators. Some call them n-gens. They create almost anything, up to the size capacity of the generator, from a block of white plasma. To the right of your desk, above the bookcase, you will see its door. You may tell it what you want yourself by speaking clearly. But now I will do it for you.”
“I see it.”
“What would you like to eat?”
“Roast chicken with bread sauce, mushrooms, carrots, sprouts and gravy. Followed by hot apple pie and cream.”
“Coming right up!”
“You sound like one of those vid chefs!”
“When you see a red, flashing light, you can safely open the door.”

blue swatch— Omah isn’t disappointed when he finds out Archivist wasn’t inviting him to have sex. —

“You didn’t sound very certain back there,” Archivist told him as soon as they had left the Ward Room.
“I’m certain of nothing right now!”
“I meant your choice … . The tour?”
“Oh.”
“It wasn’t an invitation for sex,” she added. He felt the buggy’s pace quicken slightly, keeping pace with her.
“I didn’t think it was. It just felt nice to hear somebody talking in a homely fashion. I guess it relaxed me.”
“Homely?”
Omah caught a glimpse of Archivist in a wall’s polished surface. He decided he preferred her dark brown hair to Soother’s black. He had to jolt himself out of comparing them both.
“Yes. My mother used to say, “Bed for you,” as if it were a state of being, rather than a place. Just like you did.”
“Oh. I don’t remember my parents. At least I don’t think so.”
“Now you don’t sound so sure.”
“No. You don’t understand … . Oh, it doesn’t matter.”
“Sorry.”
“It’s okay. They left most of your memory intact.”
A picture in his mind gave Omah another jolt.
“I think I just remembered my partner!” he cried out. “Her face!”
“Was she beautiful?”
“I guess. But I really miss her already. And it seems like only yesterday.”
“I’m jealous.”
“Sorry.”

violet swatch— Ome explains how he got his strange name. —

Somebody slapped the canvas on the outside of the tent and shouted, “Service!” Moments later the whole camp stirred into weary activity. The woman’s eyes lit up.
“No not that sort of service,” O’Mally explained. “No room service here baby. You’re expected to attend a church service every day. Christianity has returned here. Even for the Muslims! They won’t mind if we miss a day. Shamus is my family name. My mother’s father was an O’Mally, so my mum had the bright idea of calling me O’mally. Stupid. I suffered.”
O’Mally became silent for a moment. He gave her the thousand-mile stare and continued:
“Believe me, I suffered. But anyway, I got into acting; small stuff, a few movies you might have heard of, but bit parts. It became useful then ’cause I called myself Sean O’Mally. For the book writing I changed it again, to Seamus Mally. Anyway, my friends call me Ome, so you can too.”
“And the story?”
“Yes. Apart from the alien stuff. But that’s my interpretation.”
“Is that true about the Jesus and Brazil?”
“Yeah. Believe so. I saw it. Took me almost six months to get here. Now I have to get back. The car is gone of course. Useless without chargers. I have to get back to my girls.”
“In London?”
“Yes.”
The woman shook her head slowly, but said nothing.

violet swatch— The handsome man wakes and starts a conversation with Sabrina. —

“Anyway, how did you get here? I guess you came from London.”
Ome stare at the floor while Sabrina replied:
“Barge. I came out of London on the Grand Union Canal. It seemed like a good idea, but I could only get to just after Aylesbury. In my naivety, I thought it went all the way to somewhere like Bristol.”
“And you had no map?”
“No.”
“Clever girl. So were there many barges moving on the canal?”
“Don’t call me girl. Do I look like I am still a girl?”
“Sorry. Just a figure of speech, a bad habit.”
“I saw none. Most had been looted and sunk. In places, it was difficult to get through. In fact, I had to change barges once or twice.”
Ome nodded and asked:
“Are you going to the shrine?”
“No. I just wanted somewhere safe. I thought I would find in an isolated farmhouse. But wherever you find one, you find an army willing to defend it.”
“Well, I am leaving today. I just want to clean up and then I’m off. You want to come with me? Back to London?”
“No. It’s too dangerous. Sorry.”
“It’s alright. I have to go.”
“Your English is perfect! For an Irishman.”
“Did I say I was born in Ireland now?” Ome replied.

indigo swatch— Omaya and Mesago help plan the battle and Omaya show’s his friend a book —

Omaya and Mesago walked into the main banqueting hall, filled now with waiting officers. At their head, stood a large map table, and behind it sat Lord Tarian and his brother, Barian. Trays of food and beverages had been placed at one end of the huge, oak table and a chandelier with over a hundred candles swung ever so slightly above it, disturbed by the draft when the two new arrivals had entered.
“Take a cup of tea!” Tarian added, gesturing to a tray.
“Tea?” Omaya and Mesago said together, astonished.
“We’ve just managed to import the first crate,” Barian said. “Zeeland is going up in the world!”
“I tasted it once!” Mesago said, sipping from a white, china cup. “Mm.”
“Mm,” Omaya repeated. “It’s good. I heard of it. I tasted chocolate once.”
“Ah! Chocolate. I haven’t tasted it since I was a kid,” Tarian said. “Where?”
“Currency Palace. The Princess gave it to me.”
“So you did know her well,” Barian declared.
“I was her slave,” Omaya replied.
“Pleasure slave!” Mesago murmured, just loud enough for Tarian to hear.
Tarian nodded, with set lips but a slight smirk around the corners of his eyes.
“And now he’s buying books!” Barian added.
“Are you thinking of taking those with you?” Tarian asked.
“Yes. To read on lonely evenings.”
“Soldiers should never read books!” Barian said.
“They say books quicken the mind but slow the hand,” Tarian added.
“Though women do the opposite!” Barian said.

Today’s News in: Rip – Find the Magic Key

This is Issue 1 of a daily news update of News in the seven worlds of Rip – Find the Magic Key.

indigo swatch— Omaya and Mesago scale the walls of the last Currencian stronghold, while Brina suffers as a pleasure slave in the President of Tasman’s Palace. —

Omaya stripped naked and rubbed damp mud all over this skin. By the time he finished he looked like a clay man.
“Ready?” Mesago whispered, incredulous.
“Let’s go.”
Both men bit onto their knives and picked up the coils of rope.
“Neither of you have done this before, have you?” Barian whispered. “Tie your knives around your necks!” He handed them both knives on cords and backed away.
“Damn, these are heavy!” Omaya moaned, trying to adjust the weight of rope.
“Stop being a cry baby.”
They hunched and crept from behind the eucaly bushes up to the base of the cliff. On its other side waves of the Tasman sea crashed against vertical cliffs that the President’s best soldiers hadn’t been able to scale.
“Not many handholds!” Mesago muttered.
“Follow me. I’m lighter.”
“Makes sense. Sort of!”
Omaya felt with his finger tips and began the long ascent. Everything became a blur to him as he fought for breath at the half way point. He knew he had reached half way because he couldn’t see the ground nor the top of the cliff in the gloom. The pale rind of a waxing moon didn’t give off enough light to help much.
