blue swatch— Omah isn’t disappointed when he finds out Archivist wasn’t inviting him to have sex. —

“You didn’t sound very certain back there,” Archivist told him as soon as they had left the Ward Room.
“I’m certain of nothing right now!”
“I meant your choice … . The tour?”
“Oh.”
“It wasn’t an invitation for sex,” she added. He felt the buggy’s pace quicken slightly, keeping pace with her.
“I didn’t think it was. It just felt nice to hear somebody talking in a homely fashion. I guess it relaxed me.”
“Homely?”
Omah caught a glimpse of Archivist in a wall’s polished surface. He decided he preferred her dark brown hair to Soother’s black. He had to jolt himself out of comparing them both.
“Yes. My mother used to say, “Bed for you,” as if it were a state of being, rather than a place. Just like you did.”
“Oh. I don’t remember my parents. At least I don’t think so.”
“Now you don’t sound so sure.”
“No. You don’t understand … . Oh, it doesn’t matter.”
“Sorry.”
“It’s okay. They left most of your memory intact.”
A picture in his mind gave Omah another jolt.
“I think I just remembered my partner!” he cried out. “Her face!”
“Was she beautiful?”
“I guess. But I really miss her already. And it seems like only yesterday.”
“I’m jealous.”
“Sorry.”

blue swatch— Omah wakes up after an unknown period of cryo-sleep. He’s not sure where he is or why the woman looks the way she does. —

My brother had a ball. When you tried to kick it, it moved away from you. I grew tired trying to hit the thing.
“Don’t think about kicking it,” he told me. “The ball is designed to read your intentions. Think about nothing.”
It felt very satisfying when I finally got a foot on it and sent it into the back of the net.
A ‘beeping’ interrupted his memories.
So I have been asleep?
He tried to open one eye, but it felt gummed up. Screwing his face up to make tears, he eventually managed to open one, only to see a panel, which proved to be the source of the ‘beeps.’ A sign flashed, ‘Hello Omah,’ in in red letters. You’re in waking up phase. I’m administering stimulants.’
“Oh great! Thanks! I hate cryo-sleep!”
A distant hum occurred at the same time as his cryo-chamber began to incline. The glass-lidded container, little more than a box, began to raise at his head’s end and continued inclining until he lay at a forty-five-degree angle. The lid opened and straps released his arms and legs. He felt sharp stabs of pain as a needle retracted from each arm, but didn’t have the energy to say:
“Ouch!”
His legs felt distinctly wobbly, so it came as a relief to see an attractive woman approaching him in a white jumpsuit. The only problem; her skin was blue.

red swatch— Omah and Bri sweat their moves in a nightclub and then head back to the hotel. The night is hot and they’re both drunk. —

“I’m completely drunk!” Bri said.
“Me too, nearly.”
“You can’t be nearly and completely!”
“Well, I am! I’m a very confused man!”
“Oh, stop it. All men are! I’m so hot! Hold this!”
Bri handed Omah her mobile and began to pull her blouse over her shoulders. Omah’s eyes confirmed what he had suspected; that she hadn’t been wearing a bra that evening.
“Stop!” he said. “You’ll be nude!”
“But only from the waist up! Lots of girls do it round here. Me and my friend did it when we were here. Everybody does! Come on! You too!”
Bri handed Omah her blouse and tugged at his at his t-shirt until it rucked up underneath his armpits.
“Bri! You can’t do this! We work together! Come on! I’d better get you back!”
Omah tried to cover Bri’s nakedness every time anybody passed by but she struggled to get free, giggling. She walked past the receptionist without a care in the world, by which time Omah had conceded defeat. The strong cocktails they had drunk were beginning to take effect, and he had to concentrate to make the lift take them to the correct floor.
“Here we are!” he declared. “Room 331!”

red swatch— Omah and Bri discuss the day’s events in his hotel room and decide that they are confused by the evidence. Omah finds it hard to resist kissing her and Bri leaves, convinced he has fallen for her at last. —

“What do we do now?” Bri asked.
“Cry? What the hell are we getting into here?” Omah replied.
“I dunno. It’s big. What does that mean? Is it useful? Or gibberish?”
“I don’t know! There are an awful lot of pieces to this puzzle! Normally I struggle to fine one! This isn’t like looking for a needle in a haystack. More like looking for haystack in a small pile of needles!”
“Yah.”
“Well, I’m gonna need sleep. Tomorrow, we need to track down the other staff and find out what we can about how Bentwell got there. I’ll have to interview him but I doubt we’ll get much out of him. In any case, it’s gonna be a big day.”
“Okay. I better get some sleep too then.”
As Bri stood up, her hand accidentally brushed against Omah’s. The touch impelled him to accompany her to the door and when he opened, it she turned so that her face came to within inches of his own. Omah could feel the warmth of her breath and saw her lips, red with lipstick, open, revealing her white teeth. He wanted to kiss her.
“Good night Omah,” she said, breathing hard.
“Seven! Set your alarm!” he called after her.

red swatch— Omah discovers that the hut in the photograph has been disused for some time but not abandoned. Somebody has been there recently. —

The ride through the forest felt very pleasant to Omah, filled with views of trees just putting on the amber leaves of autumn, and silky streams gushing over rocky falls. Roger peered left and right, looking for something, and then announced:
“Here we are!”
Roger turned onto a dirt track and steered the hovercar carefully between the thick trunks of tall trees until they burst into a clearing and stopped.
“Okay. You two stay here,” Omah said. “I want to look around first.”
Omah picked his way carefully between the car and the steps to the hut, scanning the ground for anything of human origins. Reaching the hut, he tried the door but found it locked. With a hard shove, he tore the padlock off its rotten, wooden mounting and peered inside. It didn’t look as if anybody had visited for years. The meagre contents consisted of a bed, a stove and sink, a cupboard and a tiny water closet. Omah crept around the shack, peering under the bed and stopping at the bedside table. A single cigarette butt lay in an ashtray. He sniffed it, noted its damp smell and returned to the hovercar.
“Nobody’s been here for a while!” he declared, holding up the transparent evidence bag
containing the butt.

red swatch— Omah DeLion and Bri recruit a tree expert to help them locate the missing chess Grand Master Ezekiel Bentwell and the quantum AI, A-9. —

‘So she did record our conversation in her office,’ Omah thought, as he left the meeting.
Used to clients’ frustration, the detective shrugged off Greentree’s attacks, took a relaxing lunch with Rialto and led him to meet Bri in the conference with the tree expert. A large blow-up of the photograph had been projected on the wall, and the expert paced up and down in front of it pointing out shrubs of interest with a laser pen. Half an hour passed without him giving them anything of interest. Omah glanced at Bri, as if to say,
“Let’s wind this up.”
But then the expert coughed and pointed to a sapling in the corner of the photograph, asking:
“See this?”
Bri and Omah nodded.
“This is the most interesting of all. It’s Prunus trilobal, the flowering almond shrub. I had to do some research because I haven’t come across it personally. It’s only found now in
one area.”
Omah and Bri sat up, but the expert didn’t say anything else.
“Well!” Omah said, losing patience.
“Tell us!” Bri added.
The expert smiled.
“It grows around the Barro area, near the Behrendt Sea. Hope that helps!”
