Update: I have had a slight rethink. there are not enough Korean and Vietnam movies and also I forgot how good Brando is in The Men. At first I though yeah – well he is good but its about wounded men in USA trying to recover from war. But then I thought well actually that is exactly what war is about. So I am adding it. This has changed my voting by moving Burton’s performance in Bitter Victory down one and all my lower entries. Here is the list:

For me you cannot beat R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket. Especially as he wasn't supposed to be in the film, he was hired as a military advisor…

Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket 10Willem Defoe in Platoon 9John Thaw in Goodnight, Mr Tom 8Ton Hanks in Saving Private Ryan 7Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder 6Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam 5Lee Marvin in The Dirty Dozen 4Nick Knolte in The Thin Red Line 3Steve McQueen in Hell is for Heroes 2Sylvester Stallone in First Blood 1i've included First Blood, even though it takes place 6 years after the end of the Vietnam war, because the character of John Rambo is a mentally ill war veteran who spends time in the film believing he is still in Vietnam fighting against the VC. it is less an action film and more a very astute psychological thriller and very underrated. quite how the sequels came about is beyond me!for my turkey i'd like nominate Sylvester Stallone for Rambo II, III & IV – but i fear there are many worse war films out there. if you're looking for a consistently bad war film actor then Dolph Lundgren's you're man, although most of his war movies are set in the future.i have it, without a doubt biggest turkey (if only for volume of work) is Sir Richard i-can't-say-no-to-a-war-film Attenborough!

We have a clear winner in James Coburn for Cross of Iron. I thought of Steve McQueen in Hell is for Heroes too – don't know why I didn't add it and I agree definitely with the comment about Richard Attenborough – for sheer volume of work.
